Patrick Colhoun, Searching High and Low for You - Static
Materials, Messages and Meanings #9 Theme ‘Remember’
Six artists based in Northern Ireland have been selected from an open call as part of our Materials, Messages and Meaning series. Now in its ninth year, these exhibitions explore artists’ different approaches to materials, methods of production and messages within their work.
Patrick Colhoun
Ceramic, hosiery, bearing, cap nut
250mm high x 170mm deep x 170mm wide
Originally trained as a ceramicist, Patrick Colhoun's practice is now multi-disciplinary with sculptures and installations combining black clay, hosiery, latex, piercings and metal spikes. Colhoun has always strived to be unique with his art. He enjoys dividing opinion and invites the audience to either love or hate his sculptures! Surprisingly, the positive response to the darker themes encouraged Colhoun to push the boundaries of taste even further and he soon introduced objects and materials into the clay sculptures.
Inspired by memories of childhood toys, this piece draws on the personal experience of losing a parent during early years. Based on a war time military searchlight, it is a homage to memories that were never allowed to be made. A more mature palette, but the sentiment is exactly the same, still searching, still remembering, even into later years when mobility is gone
