R-Space in Lisburn invited sonic visual artist and curator David Littler to research, exhibit and perform new work exploring the sonic landscape of the linen industry in Lisburn and the Lagan Valley. The commission unites the sounds of machines and production with the songs and stories of people involved in the industry, such as doffers, hacklers, roughers, dressers, spinners, cagers and weavers.
The project will involve collaborations with former and current linen mill and factory workers, traditional musicians and contemporary sonic artists from the area. The sonic installation runs from 14th February - 14th March 2015 and will include a series of live performances and collaborative making and singing sessions.
The project builds on Littler’s recent project Yan Tan Tethera (a traditional method of counting sheep) at the English Folk Dance and Song Society, which celebrated the songs of men, women and children working in the textile industry in England.
David Littler is a founder member of sampler-cultureclash – an international collective of sonic and digital artists, textile makers, and traditional and electronic musicians. His work focuses on creating social spaces where people can to come together to share, make, invent and perform.
